A Tampa Bay consumer bought two hoverboard's, one from Amazon and the other from eBay and both were counterfeit. She thought she was buying a leading brand but got duped!

From wfla.com. They’re cool. They’re fun if you can stay on one and not fall. Hoverboards took Christmas 2015 by storm. They were the must-have gift of the holidays.

Lakewood Ranch resident Kay Culliton ordered one for her grandson. “I wanted to really surprise him when he was down here on spring break,” Culliton said.

She bought a board on Amazon, thinking it was top-notch. Soon after the gift arrived in Kentucky, where the grandson lives, Culliton got a letter warning her about generic hoverboards.

“I didn’t order a generic. I ordered an E-rover 2, and they said they probably just sent that out just as a precaution,” she said.

A close inspection revealed the $300 hoverboard was from China. It was a counterfeit. “It was called a Tao Tao brand. And I said, ‘I don’t want it.’ They tell me they have a better warranty. It’s a better board,” Culliton said.

Culliton started a new search and settled on another hoverboard. She purchased this one through Ebay.

The maker’s website warned not to be fooled by fake MonoRovers. “It has an American flag on it. It has a one-year warranty. It has a certification card that supposed to be on it,” Culliton said.

But the $400 machine came without a certification card or a warranty. After numerous calls and emails, including to the Chinese maker, Ebay sent Culliton an email, denying her a refund.

”I paid for, what I thought was the real thing. And I went through all the channels,” she said.

8 On Your Side contacted Ebay. A spokesman promised Culliton she will get her money back. The company has a money-back guarantee for most transactions.

Amazon Now Giving Voluntary Refunds on Hoverboards.

Amazon is offering refunds on all hoverboards sold on its site — and the federal government is very happy about it.

"I am pleased that at least one leading retailer is erring on the side of caution and taking action now," Elliot Kaye, chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, said in a statement.

Customers can get their full refund by contacting Amazon directly. "I want to commend Amazon for voluntarily stepping up, providing a free remedy and putting customer safety first," he added.

After multiple reports of hoverboards catching fire, Amazon removed several brands from its site. The problem seems to involve faulty wiring and the lithium-ion batteries, according to the CPSC, something that should be preventable.

"There are certain basic safety technologies we expect these units to have that should prevent overheating and potential combustion," Kaye said. "These are the same readily-available technologies that exist in properly manufactured lithium-ion batteries used in the notebook computers and cell phones we all use every day."
